THE PREGNANT GUPPY
by John Yeo
Living on the Space Station is out of this world. Life is lived at a different pace, when one is attempting to colonise outer Space. Captain Mark, an aeronautical engineer was in sole command of the infrastructure here. Dirk, Kirk and Birk were the rest of the crew when a huge rogue asteroid hove into view. This asteroid suddenly altered it’s course leading to an unavoidable collision. Part of the station-shell got destroyed, leaving Captain Mark to make an instant decision. Kirk and Birk would have to return to Earth to arrange for the transfer of some heavy spares to be transported in a Pregnant Guppy. Kirk would handle the ordering of the spare parts and Birk would handle the Pregnant Guppy. When all the details had been completed Kirk met up with Birk who handed him a plastic bag with a rather large goldfish swimming in it.
‘What’s this?’ Kirk asked Birk, grinning all over his face.
‘Oh! just an extra pregnant guppy to take with us to the Space station. The important one is on the launchpad waiting for us to lift off.
The auctioneer’s assistant was gingerly holding up an unusual dish. The dish was lavishly decorated with images of fruit and flowers. Billy the assistant was holding his breath, this was reputed to be an extraordinary piece of work. The illustrations were hand painted and the markings on the base indicated that this piece originated in Russia. The implication was that this dish had been stolen and secretly smuggled into Britain, rumour had it that this incredibly historical dish had once belonged to a girlfriend of Ivan the Terrible, the Tzar of all the Russia’s in the sixteenth century, who had presented a full dinner service to his girlfriend as a gift to win her hand. This exquisite piece of china was a part of that set, the remainder of which was now housed in the famous Hermitage museum in St Petersburg. Billy could feel his hand trembling slightly as this information was passed to the assembled buyers in the auction room.
Right at that moment a man dressed strangely in a Russian Cossack outfit leapt at Billy waving a sword, shouting in broken English: “This is a bloodstained dish tainted with the blood of creatures consumed by creatures. Bloodstains that will never wash away!” Billy in a shocked defensive reaction, threw the dish at the approaching swordsman. The dish broke into a million pieces. The Auctioneer, shocked; dropped his gavel, picked up a gun and shot the menacing intruder dead. History was made and lay in fragments on the floor.

WISDOM AND DIET
by John Yeo
The wise man was a scholar of wide renown, he had written many books in his short life and had a high intelligence. It was said that his last lecture before he sadly passed away, contained many secrets of how he maintained his robust health and his extraordinary brain-power. The wise man swore by the hidden properties in his diet.
“Fresh fruit and vegetables contain many micro nutrients to keep us healthy and wise. I am a firm believer in the effects of eating large quantities of oily fish to gain the benefits of the amazing properties of Omega 3 fish oils. I eat a lot of oily fish. Sardines and Mackerel cooked in many delicious ways. I can eat ten to fifteen Sardines in a single sitting. I believe that the accumulation of these oils and the micro nutrients will allow us to live longer and become more intelligent!”
Six black horses, with black plumes pulled a black carriage to the church as the wise man went to his grave, with all due pomp and circumstance. Many people attended the funeral of this man who was respected around the world for his insight and judgement.
Among the mourners along the roadside were a venerable retired couple, Jack and Lil, who had come to pay their respects. As the cortège passed them, Lil turned to Jack with a tear in her eye and asked, “How did he die?”
Jack wiped away a tear and replied “He choked on a fish bone.”
