MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (49)

MY FINAL RESPONSE to Monday’s Finish the Story 10/01/2016, which was a challenge that provided a photo prompt and the opening sentence to your story. The rules indicated that the story you came up with must be between 100-150 words, not including the given opening sentence.

This is a sad memorial post to the late founder of Monday’s “Finish the Story” ~ Barbara “Babs” Beacham, who is sadly missed by many writers.

Finish the story begins with:   “Life in The Foothills has Passed Away”

Marg and Sam went their separate ways. Sam with Delphine travelled to the  Brigadier’s office to wait for final instructions for the assault on the factory. Marg returned to meet Hillary to discover that her very great friend and mentor Barb, had suddenly passed away. Marg was devastated at this terrible blow, Barb had been an ongoing inspiration and guide throughout her adventures. Marg resolved to leave the organisation and disappear for a while, and was soon on the way to finalise a deal to buy a luxury yacht from a dealer based in Poole, Dorset in the UK. Marg contacted the Brigadier and informed him of her decision, he intimated that he had heard her sad news, and was expecting this, he handed her an envelope containing a very large cheque. Hillary would continue to run the detective agency, and would be in close contact with her friend and business partner. Marg planned to be transported to follow the sun, aboard her luxury yacht, sailing the seas to some very exotic islands around the world, using the considerable fortune she had accumulated during her adventures. The only ties to her late adventures, would be Angelo with Maria, his lady friend, and Bella with her husband Luigi, who would all become trusted members of her crew The brand new yacht would be officially launched and named the ‘MV Mysterious Island.’

Finish the story begins with:

Few knew about the castle hidden inside the island.”
When this Island, complete with the built in fortress came on the market, few people were in the know. The sale was made discreetly and the well-respected estate agent was sworn to secrecy.
Lawyers handled the sale and they did extraordinarily well out of the deal.
It was a terrible shock to everyone to learn that this high level of security had been breached and the island was no longer habitable due to several well-placed explosive devices.
Marg had supervised the raid. Delphine had piloted a hired aircraft and they were on the way back to the Brigadier’s, Mysterious Island.
Luigi was on his Brazilian estate when the news reached him of the destruction of his new purchase in the North. He ordered an immediate investigation. A squad of well trained operatives were instantly despatched to interview everyone who had been involved in the purchase.
  Then poor Marg……

Finish the story begins with:

“As her mount shifted uneasily under her, she grasped the brim of her old felt Stetson, gazed upwards and remembered Jean Pierre.”

Lucienne missed Jean Pierre, he had been fun when she visited Paris. She mourned the day he had left for Brazil, recruited by a mysterious organisation, Jean Pierre seduced with a large sum of money had promised to return and marry her when the work was finished.
Jean Pierre had served for three years in the rough tough French Foreign Legion, then recruited by the Brigadier’s organisation when he was discharged. Assigned to Marg’s team, he was present when the booby-trapped door exploded, he was thrown backwards by the force of the explosion and lying prone, blood gushing from a wound. Marg called for medical help as Don Fernando and and his team emptied the contents of the strongroom while the Little Bird helicopter lifted the badly injured Jean Pierre to safety.
The hidden cache of cash and precious metals was removed as a huge blast finally destroyed the complex.

Finish the story begins with:

Hey boys, how ’bout y’all makin’ yer Ma some wind chimes?”

This incredible greeting was made by a very tall American, wearing a large stetson with a clerical collar, who appeared from a hut as they entered an Indian village in the Brazilian jungle.
“Hi!” Replied Marg,” The wind blows freely in the jungle.”
“Glad to meet you, Madame Marg. I have been expecting you, I’m Father Michael. Everything has been prepared, we have a meal ready for you and there is a pile of packages for your attention.”
“I see now why we had to have an identification routine. I couldn’t understand why, when Don Fernando’s message came over the radio.”
Then another figure appeared from the hut, wearing combat fatigues, Angelo grinning all over his face stepped forward.
Marg was delighted. “Hi! What are you doing here?”
“I am here to travel with you all the way to Miners Hill, there is a cloud of suspicion to counter.”
“What!”

Finish the story begins with:

At first, it looked like an ordinary marble, but it was far from it.”

Great Scott!” Yelled the Professor. They were tracking through dense jungle after Paul Strang safely landed the lightning-stricken helicopter. Marg decided to head North, following bearings transmitted from Don Fernando’s team.
“Look at that!”
Paul instantly bent to pick the shining object up.
“No!” Shouted the Professor. “Leave it!”
“Why?” Questioned Paul.
“That is no toy!” Came the stern reply.
That is either the droppings of a poisonous giant Gadfly, fatal to the touch or…….”
“Yes” interjected Marg. “Be careful Paul.”
“Or” the Professor continued. “The eggs of a glass-blown frozen pterodactyl, blown in Thailand in a prehistorical era.”
Marg laughed. “Can glass reproduce?”
“A descriptive term, Madame Marg,” replied the Professor.
Marg decided to leave the object and press on.
One of the party knew exactly what it was, having accidentally dropped it. A radio-controlled tracking device, full of micro-electronics revealing to Dickus exactly where Marg’s team were.

Finish the story begins with:

“What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive”

Bella reflected on her role in the organisation after her double agent fiasco and now the proposal of marriage she had received from Alberto. She desperately wanted OUT!

Having promised many things to many people, her life was now a tangled web of possibilities.

Marg had been in constant touch with sympathetic advice and support, but Don Fernando had intimated that something very big was in the offing that would involve the entire family.
Marg now in London, was on leave after a very concentrated series of meetings and briefings. Hillary had done a splendid job of controlling the detective agency and Marg was set to offer her a partnership.
News came from the Brigadier that the Brazilian operation was going ahead, sadly without the late Colonel Tom, who’s death from a heart attack came as a complete shock.
Marg prepared herself to do battle with the devious Dickus brothers yet again.

Finish the story begins with:

The crew of the Angel Flame received orders to head out.”

The submarine slid into the water fully loaded with provisions and the required arms and explosives. The Brigadier had ordered an assault on a huge armoured luxury yacht owned by Dr Dickus’s billionaire brother Maxwell, moored within striking distance of the island.
Maxwell Dickus was a very shady character, it was rumoured, he had amassed his fortune buying and selling arms to supply some very impoverished African States.
Marg had left Bella with Don Fernando to be cared for by her relatives, the wounds were superficial and would soon heal with time and care. Marg was to remain on the mysterious island, and after a debriefing would enjoy a well-earned rest.
During this intensive interview, the Brigadier hinted there was a huge operation imminent and Marg’s recent experience and the loyalty she had demonstrated would be well rewarded. Then came the awful news, the submarine was reported sunk and lost…….
